Do they really leave you out at sea in Coast Guard training?

I have a friend who was in the Coast Guard and said during his training they left him floating out at sea for several hours and got him later. Is this is true or is he just messing with me?

He’s pulling your leg or he’s watched far too many movies and wants to pretend something that isn’t true. Either way, he’s wrong.
