What was the original reason that Joseph Smith preached polygamy?

The reason offered was theological. Smith taught a doctrine of pre-human existence; that God the Father and his celestial wives (plural) brought spirit offspring into being through celestial procreation and gestation. God the Father had progressed from a celestial pre-existence himself to babyhood, to manhood, then on to godhood. Mormons believed they would follow the same pattern of existence to god-hood themselves. That required being born on earth to human parents who were good Mormons. So Mormons were told that they must have as many babies as possible, to give physical bodies to myriad spirits who longed to have Mormon parents and priviledges in order to progress their own god-hood.

This doctrine also teaches that Jesus is but one of God’s billions of sexually begotten-in-heaven sons and the only one sexually begotten by him on earth. So if you look behind the polygamy aspect to the theology undergirding it, you can see why God the Father and Christ the Son in Mormonism do not equate with the Father and the Son of Christianity.
