How do I stain a black and white photograph?

Is there a way to stain a black and white photograph with out buying the expensive ink pens or paint stains? If so please explain how and with what type of markers?

You may be referring to a process called ‘tinting’ or ‘washing’. This is where you would get say an acrylic black or white paint (I perfer Golden Acrylics) and water it down signifcantly so it looks much like slightly colored water. Then with a brush appropriate to the area you wish to stain simply paint layers of this mostly translucent water/paint over the image.

The better question is, the image you are working on, is the photo paper fiber-based paper or simple resin coated (like what you might find at a one-hour photo). If it’s fiber based (which is perferable for a number of reasons, especially this technique) you can water down india inks, gouche, water-color or acrylic. Resin coasted however only seems to take with an acrylic medium.

Additionally there are special ‘touch-up’ inks and pencils for painting photos only. I would suggest asking this same question at a hardcore photo store, but not your local mall outlet, they’ll look at you like you have a third eye.
