What is the best way to train a hound dog?

I have a beagle/basset hound mix. I have read and heard from numerous places that hounds can be the most stubborn dogs to train. It is ringing true with my hound dog. I just need some general tips on getting her to come on command and such. Thanks in advance.

there is an old expression among hound owners: “when the nose is down the ears are closed.”

i’ve owned several hounds over the years. remember, the breeds were developed to work on their own, away from their handlers, to do their intended job. so they are naturally independent thinkers.

although they will put up with a host of unpleasantries if they are doing something they want to do they can also be very sensitive in nature. so i have found that using positive/reward based training methods work best for them. most hounds are highly food motivated & can be easily trained by using small treats to reinforce the desired behavior.
