How do you remove the shiny finish off playing cards for ACEO use?

Is there a way of removing the shiny finish without destroying the card totally? I haven’t tried to glue anything to a card or paint one without doing that yet. Has anyone have any problems doing that? I figure it would be easier to apply glue or paint to the surface if the finish is removed if possible. Thank you for any help.
Diane, ACEO stands for Art Cards Editions & Originals. They are miniature works of art that are trading card size and can be sold. I read somewhere playing cards can be used as a backing material, but it never said anything of how to prep these kinds of cards to reuse them, paint them or turn them into a collage.

You can sand it lightly using 0000 steel wool just to remove the glossiness, or you could try painting it with a clear *matte* sealer-finish which will have non-glossing elements in it (water-based polyurethane, an acrylic medium, very thinned down permanent white glue, etc.)

(Don’t know what “ACEO” is though so that may not help.)
