Statement
My inspiration comes from the possibility
of finding beauty through process. I seek abstract forms to suggest
narrative and geometric relationships. The forms suggest definite
roles. They overlap, their boundaries touch; they remain wholly
separate, drawing attention to the space between themselves and
other forms. The relationships between forms in the composition
suggest questions about intention and the possibility of change.
The title of the piece Papaver is the Latin word
for the poppy flower, and it shares the root for papyrus and paper,
thus linking the nature of the poppy to the paper on which the image
is printed. I did not have a poppy in mind when I made the work.
I had been working in a particular process on a smaller scale and
was prompted by a colleague to work larger. The title was suggested
to me later by someone who once had a poppy garden.
The title of the piece Bridge refers to the gesture.
The impetus for gesture came from a need to respond to the implied
geometry of relationships between the rectilinear shape of the paper
and placement of forms on the plane. The gesture introduced an explicit,
drawn, geometric imagery and suggested placement of new forms. Bridge
refers to structure in the image and to a role for the artwork in
pointing to a new way of working.
