Artist
Statement
My work is about personal insights gained from
living and making artwork. These relate to spirituality, observations
about my surroundings and an interest in relationships. My painting
is also about a personal fascination with the material properties
of paint and the illusory and metaphoric powers of color.
The communication to an audience and sharing of
my work is both necessary and pleasurable; however, the act of making
is, for me, private and self-absorbed. My journey as an artist is
one of self-discovery; with each new piece I gain a little more
insight into who I am and what I believe. Thus, the title of this
exhibit “Personal Myths” describes the continuous telling
of a story that gives me insight into my relationship to the world.
I also think that my paintings contain some universal truths that
are communicated in purely visual language.
This body of work represents a period of growth
and evolution, but also a period of transition. Although I am employing
much of the same vocabulary as in previous paintings, I have been
exploring new ideas, forms and types of space. There are many experiments
with surface, with light and with relationships between forms contained
within the layers of paint. I have faith that maintaining a sense
of play, awareness of what is happening in front of me and openness
to possibilities will lead me to the next level of my development.
