Statement
I am an artist working in porcelain
out of my home studios in Woodbury, CT and Alexandria, VA. My pieces
are handbuilt and fired at cone 10.
I choose to work in porcelain for its fine texture
and silkiness, its hardness when fired, and its delicacy. I use
a clear glaze, preferring pattern and detail to come from the porcelain
itself. A great deal of my work is about dress. What we wear communicates
complex data about race, gender, age, aspirations, social class
and individual expression, and where and when we are living. The
way we dress communicates hard times and lavish times, luxury and
poverty, practicality and frivolity, times of war and times of peace.
In installations, porcelain dresses suggest communities.
Despite the absence of the body, the dresses become substitutes
for their invisible wearers, conveying the body’s dimensionality
and expressiveness.
I am also interested in the connections between
clothing and architecture, in terms of shelter, protection, communication,
and identity.
